Oak Frame Porch – Wiltshire
This substantial oak-framed porch was designed as a bold yet sympathetic addition to the main house, combining traditional materials with confident structural scale. Set on granite staddle stones to lift the primary structure clear of ground moisture — with finished ground levels to be brought up flush in due course — the frame is constructed from 175mm square oak posts and beams, giving the entrance real architectural presence.
A roof structure sits above, chosen for practicality within the concealed build-up, while the exterior is finished in natural slate to seamlessly match the existing house. Internally, the underside of the roof is clad in unfinished oak tongue and groove planking, intentionally left to weather and mellow over time so it tones naturally with the main frame.
The result is a large-scale, deeply sheltered threshold space that feels honest, robust and timeless — not just a porch, but a structural statement that anchors the façade.

The porch has been designed to sit comfortably within its rural setting, using a restrained palette of oak, granite and slate that reflects the tones and textures of both the surrounding countryside and the existing house. The slate covering mirrors that of the main roof, ensuring continuity and cohesion. As the oak weathers, it will continue to blend naturally into the landscape, avoiding anything overly manufactured or intrusive. The structure relies on sustainably sourced timber and durable, low-maintenance materials chosen for longevity, reducing the need for chemical treatments or future replacement.
Following the success of the porch, we were commissioned to add a complementary oak-framed room extension, and we are now back on site delivering a substantial six-bay, two-storey oak frame building incorporating a garage, workshop and self-contained annex — a continued evolution of the same honest, countryside-led design approach.
